ABOUT US
SALTS is an independent inspectorate ensuring unbiased results as it is not a supplier, manufacturer or a maintenance agent.
The company utilises registered Lifting Machine Inspectors who are accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) to carry out the mandatory inspections/tests on lifting machines and lifting tackle.
Salts management offers total commitment to ensure client satisfaction.
Our History
In 2005, after the Driven Machinery Regulation Act (DMR) was implemented in February, Transvaal Training recognized the need for the Load Testing and Inspections of these machines. Jonathan Posthumus along with other colleagues from the industry then took their knowledge and expertise and started South African Load Test Services (SALTS).
After the implementation of the DMR, the industry needed to be educated on it and not many cared to comply. However, following an incident of injury on duty where that company was fined by the Department of Labour due to noncompliance, it got the attention of all in the industry and they soon started to observe and implement these laws and standards.
SALTS, then doing business from a single office in Kempton Park received its first payment for services rendered on the 5th of August 2006, officially putting them on the map as an independent company specializing in the inspection and load testing of lifting equipment and machines.
In 2007, The Department of Labour (DoL) made it compulsory that all lifting machine inspectors (LMI’s) be registered with The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). That year, the then General Manager of SALTS, Patrick Ruddy was the 29th LMI to be registered with ECSA. Since then SALTS only makes use of LMI’s who are registered with ECSA and has also mentored some of the most prominent individuals in the industry.
Through the years we have seen SALTS grow from its humble beginnings to becoming a market leader. In 2009, SALTS moved from Kempton Park to warehouse-offices in Jet Park, where they were situated for five years. But, even this space was not sufficient and today SALTS is situated in Unit 5 & 6 of ERMA Business Park on Main Road, Pomona, Kempton Park. SALTS has grown from just four employees in 2006 (two LMI’s, one sales rep and one admin personnel), to ten full-time employees in 2016 (four LMI’s, two sales reps, two admin and two management personnel).
But SALTS has not just expanded in employees and space, the passing of time has also seen the expansion of the scope of services SALTS offers the client. Today we are proud to say that we have the facilities to also test and inspect in our yard. We have our own solid weights and rigging equipment and in 2015 we also acquired water bags from China, ringing in a new era for the company as SALTS became registered importers. SALTS is now able to supply the client with water weights at affordable rates.
On average SALTS is now capable to test over a 100 different lifting machines and inspect over 20 000 lifting tackle items per month. SALTS is a member of the Contractors Plant Hire Association (CPHA) and The Lifting Equipment Engineering Association of South Africa (LEEASA). In 2010 SALTS also became a certificated company of the International Standards Organization for Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2008) and is now in the process of going over to the new 2015 version.
SALTS’s Management offers total commitment to ensure client satisfaction. Their mission statement is to remain an independent company offering professional services, advice and unbiased results to their clients. In this industry, safety comes first and SALTS will remain dedicated to educating their clients on the laws and assist them in the compliancy thereof. All testing and inspections are done in accordance to the DMR and relevant SANS standards and the future will see SALTS staying at the top of its class and a market leader.
